Description
The ECE Dovetail Plane is used to cut the tails or tongue of a sliding dovetail joint. The Hornbeam sole is toothed and glued to the Red Beech Body and measures 240mm (9 1/2″) x 50mm (2″). The adjustable steel fence sets the depth of the tails to a maximum of 33mm (1 5/16″). Maximum shoulder depth is 23mm (7/8″). Nicker blade is HSS and has 4 sharpened edges. The nicker blade cross-cuts the wood fibers ahead of the main iron to prevent tearout. A Torx allen wrench is included for the nicker blade attachment screw. Cutting bevel is 11 degrees. Iron is machine sharpened to 25 degrees. Final sharpening is required.
The ECE wood body planes provide elegant simplicity by providing time tested designs coupled with modern manufacturing methods and materials. Before metal adjusters, plane irons were adjusted to very precise tolerances by a simple tap of the iron for a deeper cut. A tap on the heel of the plane reduces the cut. This simple process is still in use around the world and preferred by many craftsmen as an alternative to mechanical adjusters. Wooden planes are also easier to tune and maintain than their metal counterparts and use simple woodworking skills and tools.
